The Future of Long-Term Care

by | Jul 1, 2025 | Uncategorized

As a Certified Financial Planner™, I’ve spent years helping people prepare for retirement; however, one topic that’s still too often overlooked is long-term care (LTC) planning. Many clients tell me they want to age gracefully and stay independent. Still, the reality is that living longer often means facing higher risks of chronic illness, mobility issues, and cognitive decline.

In fact, by 2050, over 82 million Americans will be 65 or older, and those aged 85 or older will surpass 17 million by 2055 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2023). Even more concerning, Alzheimer’s cases are expected to nearly double by 2060 to 13.8 million Americans (Alzheimer’s Association, 2024).

Meanwhile, the demand for full-time LTC workers is projected to grow by 42% between 2021 and 2036 (U.S. News & World Report, 2024). This combination of longer lifespans, increasing healthcare needs, and workforce shortages paints a clear picture: Long-term care is a risk no one can afford to ignore.

Flexibility: The New Standard

Today, more and more clients—especially those in younger generations—want flexible, affordable, and customizable LTC solutions. Rather than rigid “one-size-fits-all” plans, they’re looking for options that can adapt as their health and financial priorities change.

Many of my clients have cared for parents or loved ones and have seen firsthand the emotional toll this can take. It’s no surprise that 75% of consumers aged 40-49 now consider LTC planning a top financial priority (Leading Tomorrow: 2024 Long-Term Care Consumer Study).

Simplicity: Clearing the Confusion

I hear it all the time: “Steve, LTC planning is so overwhelming.” And it’s true—many people underestimate care costs and misunderstand what traditional LTC insurance covers. While 64% of consumers say LTC planning is a priority, only 33% feel confident in their plans (Leading Tomorrow: 2024 Long-Term Care Consumer Study).

Simplifying choices, using clear language, and offering transparent education can empower you to make confident decisions. In my practice, I emphasize easy-to-understand strategies and walk clients through step-by-step solutions, enabling them to plan with clarity and peace of mind.

Technology: A Game-Changer for Aging Well

Technology is transforming how we plan and deliver care. From telehealth and smart home devices to AI-driven planning tools, technology is enabling more extended care at home, easing caregiver burdens, and streamlining decision-making.

By 2033, the global LTC software market is expected to reach $11.5 billion (Straits Research, 2024). While tech is essential, it must support—not replace—the human element that defines quality care. The best solutions blend innovation with personalized, compassionate guidance.

Supporting Caregivers: An Overlooked Priority

More than 53 million Americans provide unpaid care to a loved one today (seniorliving.org). Many of these caregivers are balancing work, family responsibilities, and their own health, with 51% struggling to manage obligations and 47% experiencing burnout (Leading Tomorrow: 2024 Caregiver Study).

When we plan for LTC properly, we not only protect ourselves—we also ease the burden on those we love most.

Why You Need to Act Now

The message is clear: rising costs, increasing demand, and evolving consumer expectations make planning ahead essential. Flexibility, simplicity, and technology are no longer optional—they are vital for protecting your independence, savings, and legacy.

Whether you’re already retired, approaching retirement, or just starting to think ahead, now is the time to develop a plan that fits your needs and evolves with you.
